APFELTHALER (Regional Representative)
FH JOANNEUM, Austria
gerhard.apfelthaler@fh-joanneum.at
Gerhard APFELTHALER received his Doctorate in Economic and Social Sciences at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (Vienna/Austria) and Master's degree in Business Administration and Chinese Studies at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration after having studied at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (Vienna/Austria), the University of Vienna (Vienna/Austria), the Taiwan National Normal University (Taipeh/Taiwan), and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). From 1989 to 1993 he served as Coordinator for International Exchange Programs at the Vienna University of Economics and Coordinator of the International Study Program of the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS), as a Project Manager of a regional development program in Eastern Europe under the auspices of the Austrian Federal Minister for Youth, Environment and Family in 1993 - 1994. In 1994 he joined the Department of Foreign Trade at the Federal Austrian Economic Chamber, and from 1994 - 1997 he served as the Austrian Deputy Trade Commissioner to the United States in Los Angeles/USA. From 1997 - 2000 he has been the Dean of International Business Studies at FHS Kufstein-Tirol, and starting 2000 he has been Austria's Commercial Attache at the Austrian Embassy in Singapore. Currently, Gerhard Apfelthaler is Head of the Department of International Management at FH Joanneum.
Gerhard Apfelthaler has published several books (e. g. Management Internationaler Geschäftstätigkeit (Vienna: Springer 2001), Interkulturelles Management (Vienna: Manz/Fortis 1999), Internationale Marketeintrittsstrategien (Vienna: Manz/Fortis 1999), USA Businesswise (Vienna: Linde 1997) and articles (e.g. "Corporate Global Culture as Competitive Advantage: Learning from Germany and Japan in Alabama and Austria" (forthcoming, Journal of World Business), or "Why Do Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Invest Abroad?" (Journal of Small Business Management, 2000), "Erfolgsfaktoren Oesterreichischer Direktinvestitionen in den USA" (Journal für Betriebswirtschaft, 2000) on foreign market entry strategies and cross-cultural management. He also regularly consults to a number of Austrian and International companies on these issues and is a member of the Academy of Management, the Academy of International Business, the Strategic Management Society and the International Association for Business and Society.
To me the Academy of Management has always been a rich, if not the best, source of information on the state of the art in management theory and research as well as a perfect networking opportunity with likeminded academics and managers from across the globe. At the same time I have seen a very tangible US-bias in the way the Academy works and thinks, even down to the level of evaluating the quality of research from abroad which has made it sometimes less appealing and more difficult for foreign colleagues to participate in its activities. As I believe that the Academy could only profit from a wider, culturally more diverse membership, I appreciate the MIC group's current initiative and I am proud to be able to assist as a co-country representative for Austria.

Univ. Prof. Dr. Gerhard FINK is Jean Monnet Professor for applied microeconomics in European integration and at present Chairman of the Institute for European Affairs (Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence) at Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien. He also is faculty member of MBA Krems at Danube University. During 1973-1990 he was affiliated with The Vienna Institute for Comparative Studies (WIIW, director during 1984-1990). He is certified business consultant by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce specialised in foreign direct investment (project appraisal, risk analysis, cross cultural management). His research deals also with corporate finance and financial market development in the process of European integration.
My concerns are to help IMD members to find research partners in Austria and Central Europe, to motivate people from Central and Eastern Europe to join IMD AoM and to make students aware of the benefits of being member of AoM.

lazarova@rci.rutgers.edu
Mila B. LAZAROVA, being born and raised in Bulgaria and having received a substantial part of my education there (I hold a Master's degree in International Economic Relations from the University of National and World Economics in Sofia), I am fully aware of the enormous intellectual potential of this country. I truly believe that there are many opportunities for synergetic cross-country collaborations among researchers from Bulgaria and countries from other parts of the globe.
I am honored to serve as a liaison in such an exciting and noble initiative as the Membership Involvement Committee. I will be very happy if I manage to assist even one person in getting more involved in the Academy and the opportunities it presents. As to who I am - a PhD candidate, working on her dissertation in the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University in NJ, USA. As anyone who has been through this knows, this is a formidable effort, so I am awake most of the time - which has the added benefit that I am relatively easy to find and respond to e-mails and phone calls with predictable frequency. Please do not hesitate to contact me!

Her research interests are: succession planning; leadership and management development; group and family dynamics; intergenerational transitions; culture; and human recourse management. Largely as a result of her initiative, the University of Cyprus is one of the few in Southern Europe and the Middle East to promote and publish research in the emerging field of family enterprise. In addition, she has highlighted research into the prevalence of smoking behavior among young people and for the first time Cyprus is now included in the WHO research monogram on smoking and youth. Eleni has made many conference presentations and is responsible for organizing the first academic international conference on human resource management in Cyprus, held in 2001, in collaboration with the Cranfield network project.
In her capacity as a country representative for Cyprus she aspires to help raise awareness of international management research and promote international research collaborations, especially in relation to countries like Cyprus where the production of academic research is in its infancy.

Pavla
Breckova
Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic
breckova@fbm.vutbr.cz
Pavla BRECKOVA is a Ph.D. candidate at the final stage of the course at Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Business and Management. During my Ph.D. study I had an opportunity to spend a number of months at foreign universities (Cranfield School of Management, UK, Oxford Brookes University, UK), which helped me a lot not only to form my research focus, but also to understand better the European nature of the science collaboration.
My main research interests are connected with the phenomena of internationalization, its barriers and modes of entry. At the moment I concentrate especially on small and medium sized enterprises in the context of European Union enlargement, however, at the same time I participate on a number of projects applying also to the Czech larger companies and globalization impacts.
I have been pleased by the offer to become an official part of the active network of people working in the area of international business/management. The opportunity to serve as a Country Representative for the Czech Republic is highly appreciated especially from the point of establishing new contacts and possibly putting people with the similar research interests together. During my stays at the foreign universities I realized how important such a networking is and how big reserves exist in this field in my country. As a Ph.D. candidate I can feel this deficit strongly. If I use this experience and succeed in connecting people in this area it may be beneficial for all of us.

I decided to become a country representative for Denmark in order to help Danish scholars become more involved in international research networks. Having been involved in teaching and research in both Denmark and the U.S. for several years, I have gained a thorough understanding and appreciation for the differences in culture and methodology pertaining to academic life in the two countries. Since I strongly believe in the benefits of cross-cultural collaboration and the value of intercultural research and feel that I have learned from my experiences, I decided to devote part of my time to help my Danish colleagues overcome the geographical and cultural barriers between Denmark and the U.S. Please feel free to contact me at any time for more information about the Academy of Management or issues related to research and teaching in the U.S.

I am Associate Professor, University of Southern Denmark, Department of Organization and Management. Previous positions are Assistant Professor, Odense University, Department of Management, and Visiting Assistant Professor, Odense University, Departments of Marketing and Management. Before that I was a research fellow at the European University Institute, Florence. I got my Ph. D at Århus Business School. My research interest for network structures, matrix management and cross cultural management originated in my previous area of political science with foreign policy as special area of interest. I got my cand. scient. pol. degree from the University of Århus and from University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Before then I spent a year in Hypokhâgne in a French high school. In my current position my main teaching responsibility is International Management, which I teach at different business programs. My main administrative responsibilities is program coordinator of International Management a graduate business program in English.
I accepted the suggestion to become a country representative for the IMD membership involvement committee because I believe that Danish researchers in international business can benefit significantly professionally and socially by having links to the Division for International Management. As one of the first Danes I participated in the AoM meeting in Anaheim in 1988 when the number of AoM membership was half of the current number. I was properly introduced by an AoM insider and have experienced outstanding benefits on a professional and personal level ever since. I will be happy to be of assistance to new members as I believe that AoM also can benefit from a more truly and authentically global representation of viewpoints in the AoM debates.

rebecca.piekkari@shh.fi
Rebecca MARSHAN-PIEKKARI is Research Fellow at the Department of Management and Organisation at the Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration in Helsinki. In addition to her teaching commitments in Finland, she has extensive experience of teaching international business management courses at foreign institutions and business schools such as, Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), University of Bath (UK), University of Groningen (the Netherlands), and the Help Institute (Malaysia). She has also been invited as Visiting Researcher to for example, INSEAD (France), University of Sheffield (UK) and the University of New South Wales (Australia).
Her area of research specialization can be defined as international business management and she has generated four distinct research streams in this field: (1) management of communication challenges in multilingual and multicultural corporations, (2) steering and control of foreign subsidiaries, (3) collaboration strategies and network building in supranational projects sponsored by the European Union, and (4) qualitative research methods in international business. Together with Catherine Welch she is currently co-editing a Handbook of Qualitative Research Methods for International Business to be published by Edward Elgar in 2004.
Given her background in International Business, she started first attending international business conferences before becoming acquainted with the Academy of Management. The number of Finnish members at the Academy is still relatively small and there seems to be a lot of scope of increasing the Finnish membership and the general awareness of what the Academy has to offer.

Ashok is an Assistant Professor in the Strategy and Management Area at ESSEC Business School (Ecole Supérieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales) located in Paris. He teaches Strategy, International Strategy, Organizational Theory and International Human Resource Management courses in the MBA, Specialized Masters, Executive MBA and In-company consulting projects. He received his doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, India, in 2002. Before joining the Doctoral program at IIM Ahmedabad, he worked for two years in the industry. He is a geologist by training having pursued his M.Sc and M.Tech in Applied Geology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. His bachelors degree was from Presidency College, Calcutta, India. Ashok's research interest lies in the role of strategy in shaping human resource practices, creation and evolution of organizational capabilities and performance during organizational design/ organizational restructuring process, cross-cultural integration and innovation of Strategic Human Resource Management practices. He is currently working on two research projects relating to Innovative HRM practices and on organizational restructuring focussing on France and India. Ashok's research has been published in International Journal of Human Resource Development and Management and in international conference proceedings. Most of his work are currently under submission of review.
When I was a doctoral student at IIM Ahmedabad, I came to ESSEC on a doctoral exchange program, then again came as a visiting professor and then I started my academic career at ESSEC. Before joining ESSEC, I did not have the opportunity of attending international conferences. I started attending conferences after I finished my Ph.D and I began to meet academicians whose work I had only read before. Anne-Wil was one of those whom I met and interacted with to learn some of the "tricks of the trade" relating to networking, meeting and interacting people, setting up your agenda and to get the maximum benefit from the AOM meetings. I feel that the AOM is a place where a non-American researcher can get lost if they are not coached by a member of a division, who has lived through this experience. In France, the grandes ecoles (ESSEC being one of them) are in the process of internationalizing and researchers have started to do research and are trying to publish in international journals. I think there is lot of potential for international research in France and opportunities exist for collaborative research. I believe that this network can start with the involvement of the MIC to encourage and motivate French researchers to publish in international journals. Lastly, since I am neither in the Indian network nor in the French network and have just started publishing in the international arena I feel that this will provide opportunities for collaborative projects and research opportunities.

The following reasons made me decide to volunteer as the German country rep for IMD: I have experienced both the German speaking and the US academic environment and I have learned that they are quite different in many ways. In my view, both worlds could benefit tremendously from each other. I hope that I may assist in making part of the European voice stronger in the Academy of Management, and especially in the IMD. So do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding those both worlds and your engagement in any one of them.

P.A.Nelson@ed.ac.uk
Patricia A. Nelson is a lecturer (tenured) in international business at the School of Management, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Her research and teaching explores the intersection between international business and international political economy. Recent publications have analyzed US-Japan relations, Japan's foreign direct investment in East Asia's emerging markets and competition in high technology industries (particularly optics-based industries). Patricia holds a Ph.D. from the University of Warwick where she studied with the late Professor Susan Strange, an MA from Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC and a BA from the University of Virginia. After completing her Ph.D., she was awarded a post-doctoral position at Harvard University's Program on US-Japan Relations. Patricia has carried out research and taught in Japan, Sweden, the US and the UK. Her languages are Swedish and Japanese with somewhat passable French and rudimentary Chinese.
I decided to become an IM country representative because I often find myself straddling 'the pond' between the UK and the US. I feel that there is a need for deeper understanding of the similarities and differences within international management that would benefit us all. On a concrete level, I would like to play a role in promoting the flow of information regarding international collaborative research projects.

I volunteered to be one of the Spanish IM country representatives because I'd like to see more involvement of Spanish academics in the IM Division as well as to promote research links between Spanish and Academy researchers.

Associate Professor of General Management. I received my Ph.D. from the Anderson School at UCLA. I serve as the Academic Director of the Anselmo Rubiralta Globalization and Strategy Research Center at IESE. My research interests include process issues in international strategic alliances, evolutionary aspects of the interpartner relationship, and the impact that the evolution of alliances has on industry structure. My research has been published in California Management Review, European Management Journal, Group & Organization Management, International Studies of Management and Organization, Journal of Management, and Organization Science among other outlets.
I am willing to serve as IMD country representative as a way to contribute to the AoM internationalization efforts, and as a way to help improve the international exposure of colleagues in my country. So far, I have been able to involve people in an international research project. I also hope to get in contact with new people through this position.

winfried.ruigrok@unisg.ch
Winfried Ruigrok is a professor of International Management and the director of the Research Institute for International Management at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. He is a Dutch national and previously worked in the Netherlands (i.a. Erasmus University Rotterdam and University of Amsterdam), Belgium (European Commission) and the UK (Warwick Business School). His research focuses on the role of foreigners in top management teams and boards, corporate governance, and international restructuring. His papers appeared in Management International Review, Technology Analysis and Strategic Management, and European Management Journal, and in several Handbooks on Strategy and International Management. For his 1995 book The Logic of International Restructuring (co-author Rob van Tulder) he received the Gunnar Myrdal award. At the Academy of Management, he is a member of the International Management Teaching Committee, as well as of the International Theme Committee, an Academy wide committee sponsored by the Board of Governors which seeks to attract leading non-US scholars to attend and present their work at the Academy of Management meetings.
Switzerland is a country of two faces. The first face is that of a set of highly successful and internationalised firms, the second is the local and inward-looking face. The same can be observed in Swiss academia, with some high profile institutions and scholars, and many scholars successful in their own language area. I think these scholars as well as the Academy would benefit if some of that work reached a broader English speaking audience. By being a country representative, I would like to encourage Swiss and German-speaking colleagues to attend and submit more papers to the Academy of Management.

I have joined the Academy of Management because it is in my view the best source of knowledge for the latest management theory and research. It is my sincere belief, that an international institution like the AoM can benefit to a great extent from the different perspectives and contributions that members from different countries and cultures can add. By becoming a IMD Country Representative for Turkey I hope to increase international collaboration between the universities of different parts of the world and those in Turkey, including my own institution. I hope to convince more academics from Turkey to join the AoM by explaining the benefits of membership and informing them about events and announcements. Personally I hope to meet like minded individuals who are interested in doing joint research and publishing together.
