Anne-Wil HarzingAnne-Wil HARZING (MIC Chair)
University of Melbourne, Australia
anne-wil@harzing.com
External link Web site

Anne-Wil is Professor in International Management at the University of Melbourne (Australia). Before joining the University of Melbourne, she worked at the University of Bradford (UK), Maastricht University, Tilburg University and the Open University (all in the Netherlands, her country of origin). Anne-Wil's research interests are in the area of HQ-subsidiary relationships, International HRM, cross-cultural management and the role of language in international business. She is currently working on two major research projects in these areas that involve collaborators in more than 20 countries and data collection in over 40 countries. In addition to two books and several book chapters, she has published in journals such as: Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of World Business, International Business Review, Journal of International Management, Human Resource Management, Organization Studies and Journal of Organizational Behavior.

There are many reasons why I volunteered to be Chair for the newly established Management Involvement Committee. First, I feel my research and career have benefited considerably from attending the Academy of Management conferences and I would like to facilitate the same results for other academics. Second, I have learned to publish in international journals "the hard way" (on my own), but strongly feel that a supportive country network could improve the chances of acceptance for researchers that want to publish in international journals. Third, I am convinced that the Academy of Management would benefit enormously from increased participation of currently underrepresented countries and am fully committed to make this happen. I had less altruistic reasons as well. Fulfilling an official role in the Academy organisation does not only look good on your CV. It can also make your attendance of the yearly meetings more rewarding, since many participants will come up to you rather than you having to introduce yourself (a big advantage for a basically shy person). Finally, interacting with people from all over the world is not only very enjoyable, but also introduces opportunities for collaborative projects, guest lectures etc. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any ideas that would improve membership involvement or would like to volunteer to become a country rep.

India

S. ManikuttyS. MANIKUTTY (Regional Representative)
Indian Institute of Management, India
manikuti@iimahd.ernet.in

Professor in the Business Policy Area, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India. I am also an alumnus of this institute, receiving my doctoral degree in 1987. Prior to joining as a faculty member here in 1990, I worked for 21 years in the Indian Railways as a mechanical engineer, consultant to Aqaba Railway Corporation, Jordan and as a trainer. My main research interests are on corporate governance and strategic management of family firms. I teach the core courses on strategy at the Indian Institute of management, Ahmedabad. I am also greatly interested in leadership, and teach a course in our MBA program, as well as run a management development program for executives. The highlight of this course/program is that they are based entirely on readings from literature (not management literature, but, how do I put it? "literary" literature). I am convinced that reading of literature can provide rich insights in management, and I heartily welcome correspondence from any one who has a point of view may be directly the opposite!) on the subject. This program won global recognition when BBC World Service interviewed me for their program The World Today. I have published in international journals (Family Business Review, Development Policy Review and Vikalpa) and presented my papers in a number of conferences. I have also refereed for academic journals.

It is great to serve as India's country rep for the IMD. I look forward to networking and helping people who are interested in different areas of strategic management. India is a vast and growing market in which a growth rate of five percent is considered too low. Many firms from across the world are active here and are optimistic about the prospects. India presents numerous opportunities for new research and developing new theories in a fresh context. So, I could help in networking with other researchers and firms, to the extent I can.

New Zealand

Hans HansenHans HANSEN (Regional Representative)
Victoria University, New Zealand
Hans.Hansen@vuw.ac.nz

I am a lecturer at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. In addition to New Zealand, I have taught in Russia, France, and the US. Before my PhD (University of Kansas), I also worked for Price Waterhouse Consulting. I take an interdisciplinary approach in my research, and my perspectives include: culture, narrative theory, postmodernism, critical theory, symbolic interaction and structuration. In developing organization theory, I favor qualitative research, especially organizational ethnography as a methodology. Related to culture, my interest are related to the complexities of cross-cultural interaction at the organizational level, both in developing research methods, concepts, and models that help us study such phenomena in a more holistic manner.

I am looking forward to serving as the IMD New Zealand representative. Not only will I look for ways to increase New Zealander involvement in the Academy, but will also encourage all IMD members to consider ways to incorporate New Zealand into their research programs. In doing so, I am looking forward to exploring opportunities for increasing global collaboration in cultural research: across borders, methodologies, topics, and perspectives.
