Walking in Bradford

{Subtitle}

Believe it or not, Bradford itself offers some rather nice opportunities for walking. The Heaton Woods, close to the Management Centre, are a nice patch of wood where you can go for a short (2-3 miles) ramble. For easy access to these woods go to the end of Park Drive (the cul-de-sac portion).

Here is a walk or run suggested by one of the students:

Now that Spring is almost here, I recommend the following walk or cross-country run. It is a lovely contrast of open pastureland, deciduous woodland and old stone farm buildings. It is a little muddy in places at the moment, but not too bad. It will dry out nicely as the weather improves.

From the Management Centre, go north up Keighley Road for 1km towards Shipley. Just before the pedestrian traffic lights, turn left into Redburn Drive. (If you get to The Branch pub, you have gone too far !). Follow Redburn Drive to the end, up a steep hill to Royds Wood. Pass the entrance to Heaton Royds School on your left then follow the lane in front of the row of houses. The lane soon becomes a footpath (called Heaton Royds Lane on the Bradford A to Z map). Follow it for 500m through pasture fields to some houses at Heaton Royds. At Heaton Royds, turn right up the lane, past Heaton Royds farm (walking on the right hand side of the road, for safety) for about 300m to some more houses. Turn right after the 3rd driveway, down a walled path (a public footpath sign is hidden in a tree). Follow the footpath for 400m through the golf course and eventually down into a wooded valley. After crossing the stream either turn right and follow the path along the valley bottom back to Keighley Road (past the interesting outdoor model railway track). Alternatively, go up the steps on the far side of the stream. At the top of the hill, just before you leave the wood, turn right down the woodland path, which runs just inside the wood. This also takes you back to Keighley Road. From the junction of Redburn Drive and Keighley Road it is a 3km circular walk in total. Turn right down Keighley Road and back to the Management Centre.
