Web links for international students - Culture shock - British culture - British educational system - Things to see and do in Bradford

Please note: In May 2001 I moved from the University of Bradford, UK, to the University of Melbourne, Australia, and this page will no longer be updated. However, you may still find the information useful if you plan to study in the United Kingdom.

Coordinator When you start your studies in the UK, you will soon notice that many things are different from what you are used to in your home country. This is true for the educational system, the national culture of the UK and a whole number of other practical issues. This does not mean that any of these are better or worse than anything you are used to at home, but you might need some time and help to adapt to these differences.

Culture shock

Another important issue is that of "culture shock". Briefly, culture shock is the feeling of disorientation, loneliness, insecurity or confusion that can occur when someone leaves his or her home country to live in a new culture. Read the Culture shock page for more information and tips about dealing with it.

Although your main reason for coming to the UK is to study, you may also be considering working whilst you are in the UK. There are some complex regulations, and whether you are allowed to work and the type of work you can undertake will depend on many factors. This British Council page aims to make it clearer for you.
